- Improve the Delivery of Healthcare
- Reduce Information Ambiguity
- Enhance Knowledge Transfer
- Reduce Capital and Operating Costs
- Are Freely Useable
A Brief History of IHMSDO
The 30-year history of IHMSDO consists of three phases:Origins
HL7, the main IHMSDO predecessor, was founded in 1987. In 2012 the then interim board of HL7 decided to merge with DICOM and transform itself into the International Health Modelling SDO (IHMSDO). The Danish government offered logistical support to the new standards oraganisation (as it had done for IHTSDO in 2006) and IHMSDO located its HQ in Copenhagen, Denmark.
Open Standards
In 2013, IHMSDO released its standards as ‘open standards’ after receiving an infrastructure development grant as part of the Chinese government's global economic reform program. This opened up the intellectual property ("IP") formerly owned by HL7 and DICOM under the "Creative Commons" licensing policies and so enabled IHE to combine forces with IHMSDO in 2014 and become its “Implementation Profiles Division”. At the 2014 Standards and Implementation Meeting in Ghana, representatives of the "Open Source" community, notably OpenMRS and Canonical, signed the "Accra Declaration" which enabled a substantial increase in uptake of IHMSDO standards in open healthcare software.
Consolidation
A consolidation project has been started in 2015 with the intent to further align the various standards, processes and governance principles used by the various predecessor organisations.
The current Chairman of IHMSDO is Dilip Kanwar MD, the CEO is Jan S. Rasmussen BSc MBA
